We all approach our work day a little differently…but whether you’re living that 9 to 5 office life or keeping your own hours at home, it makes all the difference when you actually love where you labor. We are often approached by members of the Bond Collective community for tips and tricks on how they can elevate their workspaces.

Below are a few pointers for anyone looking to cultivate a hipper, happier and more productive work environment!

1 – LIGHT.

Natural light not only looks great, it feels great!  Situate your home office near a window and if natural light isn’t available, invest in a slightly cooler light bulb (3000 K or higher) to energize your lamp. Desk Lamps are a great way to add a functional style element to your office. Check out great selections at Beam, a Brooklyn based store, Ikea, West Elm, and CB2. We absolutely love Rejuvenations.com for lamps especially the adorable McBee lamp for only $60.  Try the JAX lamp with USB, the Cedar and Moss table lamp, the Lynwood, the Bruno or any of the Angelpoise lamps.

2 – FLOORS.

Stay grounded with a rug that doesn’t break the bank! Some of our favorites can be found at Nuloom, CB2, West Elm or Safavieh.  Something simple like sisal or jute is always a rich, neutral addition, but plush or patterned rugs can be an easy way to make a statement. Any of these rugs will also help to soften the sound in a bare room (especially if you add a sound absorbing rug pad). For rugs on a budget try Wayfair or Overstock. Also Flor.com is another great option for wall-to-wall applications! Just make sure that your rug is either 100% wool, silk or a natural fiber; viscose and polypropylene rugs cannot be cleaned!

Pro Tip: Don’t be fooled, “Bamboo silk” is just a fancy term for viscose, not a good option for high traffic areas.

3 – DIMENSION.

The right mirror can transform your modest office, reflect light and add a point of style to any room. We like this cluster of hand distressed mirrors from RH teen (another great resource) for only $31. The usual suspects, CB2, West Elm and Wayfair are also good places to hunt. Affordable art can also be found at Urban Outfitters or for something more curated, visit 20×200.com. Aarco makes traditional felt board signs that make a quirky, personalized addition to any bare wall.  As always, flea market finds and vintage items are a great to blend in with newer items to add a sense of eclecticism.

4 – RECYCLE.

Books and magazines make great furniture!  A stack of your favorite magazine subscription or books can act as a chic side table in some cases. Put a small tray atop a stack of coffee table books in your lounge to create an instant side table! If you’re not as well read, grab a stack of books for as little as $10 from www.booksbythefoot.com

5 – GREEN.

A verdant touch can bring life into even the dullest cookie-cutter cubicle. Succulents, cacti and broad leaf plants are super low-maintenance and look beautiful upon a stack of books, a windowsill or any lonely corner.  For a more sophisticated look, try a fig leaf or banana tree in one of these great planters from West Elm. More affordable options can be found at Home Depot, EPlanters.com, NewProcontainers.com and Wayfair. Our quirky “plant guy”, Dex has amazing plants at great prices. You can reach his company, Urban Jungle at (646)-841-5222 and let him know we sent you!

And if you can’t pocket the real thing, this lush graphic poster from Urban Outfitters might also do the trick….

6 – STORAGE.

Japanese organizational consultant Marie Condo got it right with her book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. However, as much as we’d like to throw out everything we don’t absolutely love, some things need to get filed away. For sleek storage alternatives try document and file boxes from The Container Store or Poppin. Replace ugly cardboard filing boxes with these handsome objects for a curated looking space as they look beautiful stacked below a table or on a shelf.  Find a few more of our favorite storage and shelving options below.

7 – SIT.

Finding the right office chair is a lot like finding the right mattress: it’s different for everybody. We highly recommend in-store shopping to find your perfect perch. Do consider your body type and personal needs when picking out a chair. If you run hot, maybe don’t invest in a leather chair and instead go with breathable mesh. If you you like a dangerously low recline, look for something solid that can stand up to your balancing act. And if you’re boney butt always hurts, a fluffy flokati arm chair might be the way to go. Here are some of our favorite designs, but make sure you try it before you buy it!

8 – TIME.

Always working against the clock? Give yourself a reason to look up from your computer by investing in a beautiful time piece for your desk or wall.  Clocks bring order into an otherwise chaotic work environment and they look pretty, too!  Here are a range of cocks we love. The Seiko maritime clocks are the perfect blend of form and function.

9 – FRAGRANCE.

Last but certainly not least, the right fragrance for your work space is imperative.  There is nothing more personal than scent, so make your space your own with a candle, diffuser, room spray or incense that you love.  Jo Malone’s Lime Basil diffuser is fresh and energizing while Byredo’s line of candles offer a more sensual atmosphere.  Sydney Hale & Co. and Illume are great, too! For the discerning nose, try Aedes De Venustas, Le Labo, Dyptique or Barney’s which all have an astonishing array of scented products. On a budget? Steven Allen always has fresh affordable  scents and I always love a cleansing incense like Santo Palo or Pinon.

Personalizing your office should be fun. Always keep your eyes peeled at flea markets, and remember Etsy, Ebay, Chairish, Craigslist and 1stDibs are great sites to search for vintage finds as well.  Enjoy making your office beautiful and share your results with us on Instagram at @BondCollective

Sweet Loren's

Loren Brill is the Founder and CEO of Sweet Loren’s, and a member at Bond 55 Broadway. Loren is a born and bred New Yorker and attended the University of Southern California. Inspired to pursue her passions after beating cancer at a young age, Loren founded Sweet Loren’s, an all-natural baking company with award-winning whole grain cookie dough. Since its inception, Sweet Loren’s has had massive success. Loren was named Top Entrepreneur in Marie Claire’s Women on Top Awards, and her company has been featured on the Today Show, ESPN, and even on Kylie Jenner’s snapchat (just to name a few).

Loren lives in the Financial District and enjoys delicious, healthy food and exercise.

At Bond 55 Broadway, Loren and her team are often found in the kitchen baking up a storm and filling the office with the amazing scent of cookies. Loren has an infectious smile and warm personality along with a powerful presence, when she is in the room you want to listen. Bond Collective’s members have asked about the face behind Cookie Fridays, a weekly tradition at all Bond Collective locations, and today we get to find out a little more about Loren. We asked Loren a few questions…

9 – How do you unwind after a long day of work?
Workout, eat a healthy & yummy dinner, and take a long bath with candles, epsom salt, bath oils, music (the whole 9 yards!).

10 – What’s your lucky charm?
I have a necklace that my first intern got me that’s become my lucky charm. I wear it almost every day. It’s miniature baking pans and utensils that I put on a gold chain that was my grandmother’s. It has inspired our packaging design and website.

11 – What inspires you?
Lots of things! Nature, adventure, creating something from nothing, loving life, feeling good, great relationships, love, delicious food, becoming the best version of one’s self, being strong, beauty, happiness, mindfulness, energy.

Antelope Canyon by Gene Horecka

Antelope Canyon by Gene Horecka

Treat yourself 2017. We’re going to jump into self-care today – the practice of taking care of your emotional and physical needs. If you can’t show up for yourself, then who will?

The goal of self-care is to prime your body and mind so you can greet each day with passion, enthusiasm, and trust that the Universe and the powers that be are supporting your goals, dreams, and aspirations. How are you making time for yourself? And more importantly, how can that time be improved?

I see self-care as two parts: physical and mental. Taking care of your body and mind are the most important and here are some tips to boost that self-love – woo!

Self-care is truly about treating yourself. Sleeping well, eating properly, doing what makes you happy – all of these are important. The ocean of life takes you through a whole lot during your day, ensure your boat is in peak condition for optimal performance! Do you have a nightly ritual? A simple method of self-care could be closing out your day with guided meditation, a long salt soak, or even something as small as a Ferrero Rocher for dessert every night. It sounds like something a New Age, crystal-toting, chia-seed inhaling millennial would do, but I am quite literally a New Age, crystal-toting, chia-seed pudding eating machine.

Wholesome, Restful Sleep

Clearing your mind and focusing on your breathing is a wonderful method of cleansing your mind so you can sleep with no worries. Today, the glorification of a “busy schedule” has taken over, but those “busy-bees” end up burnt out and unhappy with their lives. Don’t be one of those people. Also, bees have a short life – you’re a person, not a bee (#SaveTheBees2017). Try out a guided meditation before bed and see how you like it! Jessica Snow is my favorite source for guided meditations. Her voice is soothing and her meditations are quite juicy – take her Crystalline meditation out for a ride. Even if you don’t carry crystals, you can pretend that you do! You’ll sleep like a baby.

Eating well

During my freshman year at American University, I took an Intro to Nutrition class for my science requirement (Chemistry and I are not on good terms; that’s just how the cookie crumbles, my friend). The diet consists of 3 parts: lipids, carbohydrates, and protein. Carbohydrates give you energy, proteins keep you full, and lipids keep you juicy. You always want to be juicy. Your body needs all three to function at its best and if you’re missing out on one of the groups, then you’re missing out on living your best life. Don’t miss out. A solid meal will prime your body with the fuel to go about your day. Here’s a rundown of what I typically eat during my week – use this as a starter for your nutritional goals! Take out what you like, add what you want!

Breakfast: You know breakfast is named after “breaking your fast”, right? Good. Great. Glad we’re on the same page. A bowl of oatmeal doused in honey with a scoop of peanut butter, chia seeds, and a sliced banana. If you’ve seen me around our BOND Flatiron space in the morning, I always grab an oatmeal cup from our awesome honor bar. If I’m scheming at BOND Gowanus, it’s definitely hit up one of those Organic Grill protein packs in the morning – they fuel you up and keep you full! If I’m frolicking around 55 Broadway or 60 Broad, it’s definitely a Chobani cup with crushed animal crackers (Yes, I eat animal crackers! Yes, I’m 23! I’m following my bliss!)

Lunch: I’ll drop by Taza deli for a protein packed salad or I’ll head to Potbelly for a pizza sandwich and broccoli cheddar soup if I’m having a great week (I’m always having a great week, so I’m definitely on a first name basis at the Potbelly on 26th – hehehe!) If I opt for the salad route, I have a yummy recipe that’ll keep you going through that 2pm slump. Spinach, black olives, walnuts, feta cheese, chickpeas, an avocado (or three), and a loaf of mini black olive bread on the side. If I’m feeling funky fresh, I’ll drop by Wagamama’s and order the Chicken Teriyaki Donburi or the Steak Bulgolgi Teppanyaki. Don’t tempt me with a good time. A Dos Toros just opened up a couple of avenues over too! Be the type to risk it all for a good burrito. The goal with lunch is to eat something that makes you and your body happy. Follow your bliss!

lunchtime photo.gif

Dinner: Oh it’s a party! Depending on how late I’m out, I’ll grab something hearty and wholesome. Dinner is the last meal of the day before your body goes into fasting mode. I love Dinosaur Chicken nuggets, but since I’m an adult – and not in college anymore – I’ll go for a hearty protein-based meal with carbs and veggies. These days, I’ll grab a chicken cutlet or salmon, marinate and season it, and then throw it in the oven for a bit. My favorite chicken recipes are from Chef Resha’s blog, Carnal Dish. If y’all are in the party mood, Chef Resha has the most scrumptious Hennessy BBQ wings. Cognac and BBQ? Don’t tempt me with a good time. There’s also her famous Grown Mac and Cheese recipe – the answer is always yes! Eat what tastes good and makes you feel good – make it juicy, darling!

Skincare Sundays

Hellooo! Korean beauty trends are the wave! Whether it’s one of those sheet mask or a spa day, treat yourself to something completely lavish and indulgent. Just do you! Also, drink water. I send our team calendar invites to drink water, but they always RSVP as “maybe” – what cheeky buggers! Do something that makes you feel awesome whether it’s a half hour at the gym, a Y7 Yoga class, or a walk around the block, do something that gets that heart rate up.

Now for the mental side of self-care…

Our lives are full of transactions. Money, time, love – how are you being mindful to not overextend yourself and overspend these precious resources? Self-care doesn’t stop at spa days, sheet masks, eating well, and getting your body in formation. The people you surround yourself with have a huge influence on your mental and physical health. Do you have friends and coworkers who enrich you? People who make you feel fresh and alive? Do these friends give you that strength that makes you feel like you can take over the world? These are the people you want in your life.

You can always tell who belongs and who doesn’t by how you feel after interacting with them. Does someone make you feel tired and flustered after a conversation? Maybe an old friend who leans on you for support all the time, but when it’s time for them to reciprocate, they’re not there. Maybe that person doesn’t deserve to be in your life. If there are people who drain and tax your energy, maybe it’s time to *snip snip* and cut them out of your life. Tend to your garden of life and ensure your fields are in bloom with tan huas, roses, and tulips of love and support. Live to thrive another day.

Protect your energy.

BOWER

Bower NYC is making a kind of luxury design that we haven’t seen before. It is somehow minimalist and maximalist at the same time. We especially love their optical illusion inspired mirrors. We truly admire they’re ability to take an unexpected palate/materials and  transform them into something astonishing.

Lara Fischer-Zernin is the Director of Marketing and Branding at Bond Collective. She is a creative and detail oriented individual who is passionate about creating and executing operational strategies from the ground up. She has played an integral role in the creation and development of numerous ventures, including the launch of the first ad-tech team at Mozilla. It is her zeal towards building process in a collaborative, rapid growth environment that led her to Bond Collective. Lara oversaw the recent rebrand from Coworkrs to Bond Collective giving a new, sophisticated edge to the Bond brand.  In her free time, Lara enjoys time with her puppy Lola, yoga, and travel. Lara is outgoing, chic, and a little quirky, making her a dynamic leader who exudes passion for Bond and life in general. We asked Lara a few questions…

1 – First thing you do in the morning?
I hit the snooze button and let my dog Lola under the covers, so I can get five more minutes of sleep.

2 – Top 3 songs to listen to when you need to get work done?
1 – Armin Van Buuren State of Trance number 238 – that is my get shit done mix.
2 – Anything on the Babel New York soundcloud page
3 – The sound of silence that my headphones create when I am not listening to anything. Just like Yuni!

3 – Favorite coffee shop and go to order?
My go to order is a triple almond latte, the shop depends on the Bond location I am at! I also have my Nespresso maker at home, which I can’t live without.

4 – Gmail or Outlook?
Gmail, but with the horizontal preview pan setup so it looks like Outlook. I guess that’s cheating, huh?

5 – App you can’t live without?
The Podcast app… I have a dog and would not be able to survive long walks without it!

6 – First job?
My first real job was as a waitress at a seafood restaurant in the town I grew up in.

7 – Favorite lunch spot?
My days are so crazy, that I often don’t have time to grab lunch, so I started just bringing my lunch to work.  I’ve been eating a lot of avocado toast lately.

8 – Early or late?
On the spectrum, I am all over the board! I like to wake up late, but usually arrive early.

9 – How do you unwind after a long day of work?
Walking my dog is so relaxing. It’s a form of meditation for me. But if that doesn’t work, a glass of wine usually does the trick!

10 – What is your lucky charm?
I don’t really think I have one, to be honest. Is that bad!?

11 – What inspires you?
Life, music and the people around me.

12 – Social Media Account everyone should be following?
My dogs Instagram, @lola.fzp, of course! Lola is a natural. If anyone is looking for a model, she’s your girl! I promise I’m not a stage mom.

13 – Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?
“Tomorrow is a new day.”

14 – How long did it take you to get to work this morning?
About 45 minutes!

15 – When’s the last time you celebrated a win?
Personal: I managed to get through a whole Physique 57 class without stopping. It was a beginners class, but still!
Career: Another exciting win that happened recently was that one of the pictures on the Bond Collective posted on Instagram showed up as one of the “Top Photos” in several categories on insta. Our social team has been putting so much work and effort into our social media and it was awesome to see the hard work pay off!!!!

16 – If you could squeeze one more activity into your daily life, what would it be?
To take a class and learn how to use Illustrator. I’ve also been dying to learn how to code!

17 – If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Black. I hate color. My closet is literally filled with only black, grey, and white clothes.

18 – What is the most interesting thing about you?
I went backpacking for three weeks in Patagonia (the Chilean side) for my honeymoon and absolutely fell in love with it. I want to retire there.

19 – Last show you binge watched?
The Wire – SO good. I finally understand why everyone says “ahhhh, shit.”

20 – Biggest Cheerleader?
Drew Puig

21 – Call or text?
Text, text, text! If people call me, I send them to voicemail and text them back.

22 – Favorite book?
I read a lot but I can only ever remember the last couple of books I read. That being said, my favorite books I can remember reading would be Fortune’s Rock and The Nightingale.

23 – Name 5 people (dead or alive) you would invite to a dinner party.
1 – My best friend Isaac who passed away.
2 – Jeremy from Topgear. He makes me laugh so hard.
3 – Jason Segle – my celebrity crush.
4 – William from This is Us. Not the actual actor, but the character he plays.
5 – My mom. She lives abroad so I don’t get to spend as much time with her as I wish I could.

We’d be more than happy to answer them and to offer you a personalized tour of any of our locations in the Financial District, Flatiron and Brooklyn.

With the explosion of coworking spaces across the country, there’s been a massive transformation in what it means to go to the office. Entrepreneurs and freelancers were the first to acknowledge the trend that the ideal work environment goes well beyond a comfortable desk in professionally pleasant surroundings. Now big business has taken notice of the benefits of coworking—from cost savings to the ability to leverage a built-in community of innovators.

Here at Bond Collective, we’ve designed larger suites exclusively to meet the needs of executives eager to capitalize on the multitude of benefits on offer for large companies working within an established coworking space.

“For corporations, coworking can offer a competitive edge, allowing them to tap into new products and ideas that wouldn’t have been possible inside their own offices,”

Karen Williamson, Director of EMEA Research, JLL.

Is coworking the right solution for your company? Whether you’re looking for beautifully designed office space paired with world class amenities or flexible lease terms, we’ve broken down the top five reasons why moving to a coworking space is a smart choice.

1 – Coworking spaces save companies money

Infographic showing the financial benefits of coworking

Gone are the days when price per square foot was the only measure of affordability. The cost of traditional leases and custom office build-outs can quickly multiply, often racking up unforeseen expenses.

Coworking provides a unique white label solution. New members of Bond Collective step into a space that already includes premium hospitality, community staff, enterprise-level IT solutions, security and an in-house concierge. Why waste valuable time and resources hiring and developing a support team? Instead, settle in right away and keep your focus on running your business.

Our executive suites feature a built-in executive office or conference room. Coworking spaces also provide shared common areas, lounges, kitchens, private phone booths and a variety of additional conference and meeting rooms.

2 – Coworking offers flexibility where traditional leases restrict

In a landscape full of companies who dominate the global market by staying flexible, conventional office spaces can be restrictive, especially considering that a traditional lease can often take months to negotiate—and require a commitment of five years or more. At Bond Collective, we can finalize a deal within 48 hours.

We provide flexible options, so our members can grow with us. Want to move to a larger suite? Add coworking memberships for consultants visiting on a short-term project? No problem.

We look at coworking as a plug & play experience. All infrastructure and support is included in a one-time cost.

“We recognized that growing companies often don’t have the time or the capital to commit to expensive fit-outs or long-term leases, but still want a cool place to work with the flexibility to move on when they grow.”

LiquidSpace CEO Mark Gilbreath

3 – Coworking accommodates a decentralized workforce

With the proliferation of freelancers and remote workers globally, there’s been a notable shift in the way we work. Increasingly, workers are seeking employers willing to provide innovative workplaces and larger companies are seeking opportunities to scale without increasing their real estate requirements.

Recent industry reports predict that up to thirty percent of corporate real estate portfolios will be dedicated to coworking or flexible space solutions by 2030. If you’re opening a satellite location, coworking or dedicated desk memberships can give your workers 24/7 access to everything they need to do business, without the expense of investing in an office.

Entering into American markets with a small real estate footprint has never been easier.

“Large consumers of space will seek to reduce their core space footprints, but complement them with greater amounts of flexible space,”

Karen Williamson, Director of EMEA Research, JLL.

4 – Coworking provides access to a curated community of innovators

Communal Space for coworking at Bond Collective

Harnessing the energy of coworking can enhance your company’s brand image. At Bond Collective, we have built a curated community of innovators ripe with opportunities for networking—and even friendship.

Traditional leases can often sequester companies behind closed doors, and deny a community experience essential to spotting trends and leveraging outside talent. Our entire member network is connected through events, shared community culture and exclusive partnerships. Our members often collaborate, finding new audiences and markets as a result.

“As researchers who have, for years, studied how employees thrive, we were surprised to discover that people who belong to [coworking spaces] report levels of thriving that approach an average of 6 on a 7-point scale. This is at least a point higher than the average for employees who do their jobs in regular offices, and something so unheard of that we had to look at the data again.”

Harvard Business Review

5 – Coworking attracts the best talent

Companies are increasingly concerned about competing for skilled workers and millennials in particular want agility and flexibility in their workplace. Technology has removed boundaries between work life and home life, and workspaces that make people feel at home at work have a competitive edge.

Coworking spaces offer an inspired environment full of energized peers and can often mean the difference between attracting the best talent and losing out to competitors. A coworking community full of new friends, collaborators and social activities goes a long way toward creating a sense of belonging and retaining long term employees.

“Many employees are now measured by output and productivity, and not just 40 hours spent sitting at a desk. Workers and the companies for which they work are increasingly realizing that they need to provide and utilize a wide range of workplaces to accommodate an increasingly diverse workforce with very different expectations of what work is, and where and when it should happen,”

Regus CEO Mark Dixon

The coworking revolution

“The coworking revolution is transforming real estate. Pioneered by start-ups, entrepreneurs and freelancers, a growing number of companies, large and small, are exploring how to incorporate the concept. Coworking and liquid or flexible space are fast becoming critical components of wider Corporate Real Estate (CRE) and portfolio strategy.”

It’s no surprise that we at Bond Collective are taking the time to celebrate International Women’s Day. Not only do we have some of the most talented and witty female members in all of the land (I’m not exaggerating here), we also have a strong and vibrant staff that is over 60% female!

At a time where more women are being empowered by a rough political atmosphere (don’t worry we won’t get political over here), the more we set out to have our voices heard and more women of the world are taking action. There is a clear rise in women empowered blogs, forums, podcasts, marches and groups that are geared to helping women succeed in the workplace and everyday lives, regardless of the obstacles placed before them. We are seeing more women becoming entrepreneurs, leading their respective industries to success and feeling free to choose their own version of happiness. The freedom to choose what makes you happy is inherently the definition of being free. Feminism at its finest!

Our small, yet vocal staff, consists of some of the most independent, passionate, talented women that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. They are truthfully one of the many reasons that make Bond Collective the vibrant company that it is, which helps to foster the same atmosphere in each of our spaces. Aside from our day-to-day duties of helping our awesome members grow and become the best they can be, we realize that the foundation of what we do and who we are, not only has a strong female presence behind it, it has women who are actively working on lifting each other up.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality.

– Emma Watson

That’s why today, we are celebrating not only the women of Bond Collective, but those that came before us and generations behind us. On top of that, we are currently opening our arms to those women that need that extra push, those extra words of encouragement to feel free in their lives and choices. Because if we don’t encourage and want each other to succeed, we as a whole, won’t make it that far. Now is the time for us to hold hands, speak up and continue moving forward.

That’s why I’d love to share a few of my favorite blogs/podcasts that have helped me not only look at myself a little bit better, but have taught me that by sticking up for myself, I stick up for all women, everywhere. And if you’re anything like me, and your commute drives you crazy then this is your perfect tune to listen to on your commute! Enjoy! And if I dare say so myself, the future is definitely Female.
